Episode Synopsis:
The One Where Ross Got High (06.09)
Jack and Judy Geller are coming to Thanksgiving at Monica's. Monica tells Chandler not to mention they're living together (a recent development at the time), or even that they are dating. When Chandler asks why, Monica tells him her parents don't like him, but she isn't sure why. Although, she throws out some hypotheticals that are really just complaints of hers, such as, leaving his clothes lying around.
Chandler decides he will charm the Gellers to get them to "fall in love" with him, then he and Monica can break the news about co-habitating. In typical Chandler fashion, though, this goes quite awkwardly, and leads Judy to speculate Chandler is, "stoned again."
As it turns out, Ross smoked pot in college. When his parents dropped by for a visit and smelled it, Ross told them Chandler (his roommate at the time) had gotten high and jumped out the window. And this is why they don't like Chandler.
Meanwhile, Monica has placed Rachel in charge of dessert this year, and has no backup plan. Unfortunately, the cookbook pages stick together, and Rachel ends up making something that is half trifle, half shepherd's pie.
Layers of ladyfingers, jam, custard, raspberries, more ladyfingers, beef sautéed with peas and onions, more custard, bananas, and whipped cream on top. And there's some rum involved somewhere (probably in the bananas), as she asks to borrow some from Joey.
Joey and Ross are also invited to spend Thanksgiving with Janine, Joey's new roommate, and her "hot dancer friends," so they try to duck out of Monica's gathering early. The girls (Monica, Phoebe and Rachel) make them stay.
Ross and Joey decide to not tell Rachel she made a mistake with the trifle. Their motivation is basically that if she has to start over, they won't get to go see the dancers. Joey convinces the other guests to pretend they enjoy the trifle, while Ross distracts Rachel out in the hallway.
Ross repeatedly avoids telling his parents the truth about the pot situation, so Monica finally blurts it out. An angry Ross calls Monica a "tattle tale," then admits it wasn't Chandler who got high in the dorm room back in the 80s.
Monica and Ross then start yelling out secrets, like Ross being fired from the museum, marrying Rachel in Las Vegas and getting divorced... "AGAIN!", and so on. Ross yells out that Monica broke the family's porch swing, not hurricane Gloria. Then he drops the bomb that she and Chandler are living together.
In the midst of all this yelling of truths, Phoebe adds she is in love with Jacques Cousteau (after a dream she had earlier, where he won her heart away from Jack Geller). A horrified Rachel realizes she wasn't supposed to put beef in the trifle. And Joey yells, "I wanna GO!!"
Judy Geller, in one of Christina Pickle's finest moments on the show, is completely overwhelmed by getting so much information in 30 seconds time. She then addresses most of the things the Friends had blurted out. Jack chimes in, "we kind of figured about the porch swing."
Jack and Judy ask Ross about his recent string of surprising behavior. They then approach Chandler, and tell him he is, "a wonderful human being" for having been Ross' best friend through his "drug problems." They also express joy about he and Monica being together.
Judy and Jack express disappointment in their children, prompting Chandler, whom they're now very fond of, to say, "I'll talk to them."
